Helping Members run their schemes, August 2023 update

04 August 2023

At the start of August, I should be wishing all PLSA members a pleasant and relaxing time over the next few weeks, ideally with some decent weather and holidays in the mix.

Alas, the reality feels rather different, since many of you – and certainly my colleagues in the PLSA’s Policy team – will be busy digesting the array of pensions-related consultations published a fortnight ago under the banner of the Chancellor’s Mansion House Speech and the ‘pensions and growth’ agenda. The deadline for most of these has been thoughtfully timed for 5 September, so August has suddenly taken on a different complexion.

The consultations cover everything from small pots to trustee skills and every part of the pensions landscape from DB to DC and the LGPS. You can find a handy summary and the PLSA’s initial comments on our website.

The good news – certainly for my Policy colleagues – is that we are not starting from scratch with our responses. We have well-established positions on many of these issues, developed through previous consultation rounds, in our private briefings for Whitehall officials and in our Five Steps to Better Pensions report, which we’ll be updating at this October’s Annual Conference.

Please let us know if you have points to contribute to our work or if you are drafting your own response – it's always good to swap notes.

Looking further ahead, we have published the dates for our 2024 Investment and Annual Conferences. Do please put them in your diaries, and please let me know ([email protected]) if you want to take up the new option of holding your trustee meeting at one of our Conferences. It would be great to see all your trustees there, but it is first-come-first-served for our limited number of meeting rooms.

Enjoy the ‘summer’ – and I hope it’s not all work.
