Chair, DC Council
Carol is Director of Reward, Pensions & Benefits at RBS. She leads the teams responsible for all aspects of remuneration across the bank, the flexible benefits programme for over 60,000 colleagues and DB and DC pension arrangements for over 300,000 members (c£45bn liabilities) worldwide.
She is chair of the Pension and Lifetime Savings Association’s DC Council, chairs the CBI pension panel and is a governor of the Pensions Policy Institute.
Carol’s career spans 20 years across in house and consulting roles and includes a decade as an investment consultant. She has served as independent trustee on a number of boards, and is a trustee of the bank’s UK DC scheme.
Carol is a CFA charterholder and has particular interest in pension investment, effective engagement and governance.
Trinity Mirror Group
David is Group Pensions Manager for Trinity Mirror plc. He is also Trustee Secretary and a Trustee Director of all schemes within the Group and leads the Group’s trustee support operation.
Previously with Britvic Soft Drinks, he converted the DC Plan to automatic entry and prepared the Trustees for the Company’s Stock Exchange floatation. Prior to that he was NAPF Director of Benefits and spent his early career at Canada Life.
David is an elected member of the PLSA Defined Contribution Council and immediate past Chairman of the Central London Local Group and the Local Group Liaison Committee.
Francois is the head of Eversheds’ Pensions group. He advises on the full range of both defined benefit and defined contribution pension issues, including plan mergers, pensions investment issues and governance for both trust and contract based pension plans.
Francois is actively involved in the development of pensions law and policy. He has advised the CBI's Pensions Panel for over a decade and served on the Pensions and Lifetime Savings Association's Retirement Policy Council before joining the DC Council.
Rob is Head of Proposition at NOW: Pensions and within that role he also has responsibility for bringing the fund management capabilities of the Danish firm, ATP to the UK Workplace Pensions market.
Prior to joining NOW, Rob was responsible for Investment Strategy at AXA Corporate Benefits, where he launched a sophisticated blended fund capability into the market, developed joint ventures to introduce modern investment techniques to the UK, and applied his passion for clear and simple messaging of investment principles to pension scheme savers. In his earlier career, he was an employee benefit consultant, advising clients on DB and DC scheme design and investment strategy. One of Rob’s perennial passions is the design of default investment strategies, and the application of lessons learned from research into behavioural finance.
Outside of work, Rob is a rugby coach and makes some noise in a nine-piece soul band.
Schroders Investment Management
In 2008 Stephen joined Schroders UK Institutional Business Development team, with responsibility for defined contribution, including sales and marketing to UK defined contribution pension schemes and their consultants.
He previously worked at Prudential with responsibility for the institutional investment only platform. Prior to that as a pensions and investment consultant with Hewitt Associates and a pension scheme administration manager with both Fidelity and Friends Provident. He commenced his pensions/investment career in 1995.
He holds the Investment Management Certificate (IMC) and is an Associate of the Chartered Insurance Institute. He gained a BSc in Economics and Politics from Bath University.
Lane Clark & Peacock
Andy is a Partner in the DC team at LCP, having joined them in 2010. With over 35 years of experience in the employee benefits market, Andy guides employers and trustees through the design, creation, communication, delivery and ongoing monitoring of DC pension arrangements.
Andy's most recent work has focused on the implications of “Freedom and Choice for Pensions”; workplace pension reform together with the design of default and investment range options; change and transition management; and the implications of behavioural finance for member communication.
Andy was elected to the DC Council of the Pensions and Lifetime Savings Association in 2013.
Dermot is Head of Group Pensions for Kingfisher plc and acts as Secretary of the UK Kingfisher Pension Scheme. This Scheme has a closed legacy section with c37000 DB members and c£3bn of AUM and a DC section with c32000 members and c£160m AUM.
He is a member of the Advisory Council of the Money Purchase Forum and OPDU.
He is a Chartered Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (Chartered FCIPD) and a Fellow of the Institute of Hospitality (FIH).
His interests include Rugby Union, and he is a former Hon Secretary of his local club – Keynsham RFC Ltd.
Legal and General Investment Management
Emma joined LGIM January 2014 and is now Head of DC, responsible for LGIM’s bundled and unbundled DC business. Her role involves working with LGIM’s DC clients and delivering innovative DC solutions to the market. Emma joined LGIM from Mercer where she was Head of Mercer Workplace Savings.
Prior to Mercer Emma was Head of DC Sales at BlackRock and Head of DC Pensions at Threadneedle Investments, and has more than 20 years of experience in the investment management industry.
Emma has a MA in Modern History from Trinity College Oxford and a MBA from Manchester Business School via a 'Women in Management' scholarship from ‘The Guardian’. Emma is a member of the Pensions and Lifetime Savings Association Defined Contribution Council.
Mel is Pensions Strategy Executive at the Universities Superannuation Scheme (USS), the hybrid pension scheme for academics and related roles in the UK higher education sector. Mel has been heavily involved in the design and implementation of the scheme’s new DC section, USS Investment Builder, since joining USS in February 2015, and has a wider remit covering employer and member insight, product strategy, and employer liaison.
Before joining USS, Mel was Deputy Director at the Pensions Policy Institute (PPI), an independent research charity focusing on pensions and retirement savings issues, and prior to that Head of Research and Strategic Policy at PLSA.
Mel started her professional career in the UK civil service, working as a senior economic advisor at HM Treasury, the Department for Work and Pensions and the Department for Education.
Mel has a BSc in Economics from Nottingham University, an MSc Economics from Bristol University, is a serving Magistrate on the SW London bench, and plays football and climbs mountains in her spare time.
Jamie became Chief Operating Officer for Smart Pensions in early 2018. Previous to this he was at B&CE, provider of The People’s Pension where he had responsibility for Operations, IT, Strategic Delivery and Policy & Market Engagement for the B&CE Group whilst also holding posts as Executive Director of B&CE Financial Services Limited and B&CE Insurance Limited.
Jamie is passionate about improving pension provision for low-to-moderate earners and the change that Auto Enrolment will bring about. He played an integral role in the design and creation of The People’s Pension, a forward-thinking response to the Government’s Auto Enrolment challenge of October 2011.
Jamie is a Fellow of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants with over 24 years’ financial services experience having joined B&CE in 1994 from Barclays Bank Plc.
Marks and Spencer
Simon is Head of M&S Pension Trust and Chief Investment Officer for the M&S Pension Scheme. He leads the executive team that supports the Trustee. Prior to joining M&S in July 2015, he spent over 7 years at Lloyds Banking Group as Head of Investments where his role included responsibility for the design, implementation and monitoring of the investment arrangements of the Group’s defined contribution schemes. Previously he was Head of Strategy & Investment for the UK pension schemes of telent (formerly Marconi and GEC).
He is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants, a member of the Pre-Emption Group of the Financial Reporting Council and a graduate of the University of Southampton.
Kevin O'Boyle has held senior management positions at a number of large multinationals including Standard Chartered Bank, SmithKline Beecham (now GSK), GEC (Marconi) and currently BT plc. A MA (Hons) economics graduate from Edinburgh University, he has run a trustee company, an investment management business and a US benefit consultancy business during his career.
At BT he is responsible for over 200 pension and benefit arrangements including the BT Pension Scheme, the UK’s largest private sector scheme and the BT Retirement Saving Scheme - a DC scheme with c£1bn in assets and c 30,000 members. At the other end of the spectrum he also manages a number of much smaller schemes so deals with all issues facing the industry regardless of scheme size and complexity.
Kevin has been at the heart of change of some of the most complex pension and benefit arrangements possible and is a regular speaker on pension and benefit matters both in the UK and international and is the author of a number of pension publication covering a variety of subjects.
Local Groups Representative
John’s first foray into pensions was in 1982 when he joined the Superannuation Department of East Midlands Gas as a Superannuation Assistant.
In June 1987 John was appointed as the Pensions Manager of Next Plc. Originally based in Leeds (the old Head Office of the now extinct J Hepworth and Son), the Pensions department moved to Enderby, a village just outside Leicester, in September of that year.
John is the current Chairman of the East Midlands branch of the Pensions and Lifetime Savings Association and is married with two adult children.
In his spare time is a Season Ticket Holder at the home of the Premier League Champions, Leicester City.
